Cold-process soap is made by combining oils and fats with sodium hydroxide, which creates a chemical reaction called saponification. The finished soap is then allowed to cure for several weeks. This traditional method naturally produces glycerin and allows us to create handcrafted bars using ingredients such as olive oil, coconut oil, tallow, shea butter, goat milk, coconut milk, clays and other specialty ingredients.
Handmade cold-process soap is created in small batches using oils, butters and other thoughtfully selected ingredients. The cold-process method naturally produces glycerin during soapmaking, and that glycerin remains in the finished bar. Many commercial cleansing bars are formulated differently and may use synthetic detergents or have glycerin removed during manufacturing. Handmade soap also allows for more variety in ingredients such as goat milk, coconut milk, tallow, clays and botanicals.
Glycerin is naturally created during the soapmaking process when oils and fats react with sodium hydroxide. In handmade cold-process soap, that glycerin remains in the finished bar. Glycerin is a humectant, which means it helps attract moisture to the skin and contributes to the smooth, conditioning feel many people enjoy in handcrafted soap.
Goat milk contains naturally occurring fats, proteins and sugars that can contribute to a creamy lather and a smooth, conditioning feel in handmade soap. It is a popular addition to cold-process soap because it creates a rich bar while complementing oils and butters commonly used in handcrafted formulations.
Coconut milk contains natural fats and sugars that can contribute to a rich, creamy lather and a smooth feel in cold-process soap. It pairs well with the oils and butters used in handmade soap and adds another layer of richness to the finished bar.
Tallow is a traditional soapmaking fat that helps create a firm, long-lasting bar with a creamy, stable lather. It also contributes to the smooth, conditioning feel of cold-process soap and pairs well with oils such as olive, coconut and castor oil.
Activated charcoal is a finely powdered ingredient commonly used in handmade soap for its deep color and cleansing feel. It can help give the bar a rich lather while providing a distinctive look and texture. We use it as one of several specialty ingredients in selected cold-process soaps.
Yes. We offer fragrance-free handmade soap for customers who prefer a simple bar without added fragrance oils or essential oils. Our fragrance-free options are still made using the same cold-process method and carefully selected oils, fats and other ingredients used throughout our soap collection.
Cold-process soap typically needs about four to six weeks to cure before it is ready to use. During this time, excess water gradually evaporates and the bar becomes harder and longer lasting. We allow our soaps adequate curing time before offering them for sale.
Rhonda Karin Soap products are handcrafted in small batches in Texas. Our soaps are made using the traditional cold-process method, with carefully selected oils, butters, milks and other specialty ingredients depending on the individual bar.
Choose a soap based on the ingredients, fragrance and type of bar you prefer. We offer options made with goat milk, coconut milk, tallow, activated charcoal and other specialty ingredients, as well as fragrance-free bars. Each product listing includes its ingredients and description to help you compare the different soaps.
While we do offer some all-natural products that do not contain fragrance and mica, most of our soap bars contain Fragrance Oils and Mica.
It just depends on how you use it. A full bar of soap in the shower, for instance, tends to last around a month if used generously daily. That’s if you keep it dry between uses and away from the shower head stream while showering. Otherwise, natural soap can get a little soggy. If you’re just using it as hand soap, it should last around 2-3 months. But factors like how much you use or how humid the environment is all can change how fast your soap depletes. Stretch the usage out by keeping it dry between uses or use a soap saver bag or soap dish that drains.
